Results of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey
Always worth re-posting.
The largest survey to date (6,450 participants) of transgender people and their experiences has revealed that
- 41% of respondents have tried to commit suicide (26 times the national average)
- The transgender community is 4-5 times more likely to live in extreme poverty and twice as likely to be unemployed.
- 26% had lost a job because they were transgender (accounting for those not hired in the first place or denied promotions, that number increases to 47%)
- 90% report workplace harassment/mistreatment
- 19% had been refused housing and 11% had been evicted as a result of being transgender
- Transgender people are far more likely to be forced into the “underground economy,” in the sex and drug trade.
- The incidence HIV in the transgender community is 4 times the national average.
- 22% report being harassed by the police
- 19% have been refused medical care because of their gender identity, the rate is higher for those of color
- Almost 3% report having been attacked in ERs.
Important to note:
- Discrimination against transgender people is legal in 38 states. Discrimination against LGB people is legal in 29 states.
I can’t say I’m surprised. Just disappointed.
